Introduction to the “Art of Beautiful Writing”

Instructor: Julie Wildman

This is Calligraphy Appreciation 101! In this class, participants will get an overview of the fascinating world of calligraphy, from historical manuscripts to the modern-day lettering arts. We will be inspired by different calligraphic hands found in the many works we’ll view, and then we’ll get to experiment with the tools that the masters’ used to create those works.

There will be plenty of demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. Students will get to try new tools, different hands, all sorts of beautiful papers, and various media. Our time together will be fun, informative and not at all threatening, and maybe even a bit messy!

Rather than producing a finished piece, students will come away with a variety of samples that will help them begin exploring ways to create new works on their own time.

This is a great class to whet your appetite for the world of letters! And that world is going to blow your mind!!!

Members’ Meeting & Election

Our annual March Members’ Meeting and Election is almost here! Time to vote for a new Board and to catch up with old friends.

In addition to the Election, we have some fun things planned. Susan Clark, owner of Graphic Chemical and Ink in Villa Park, IL will be on hand to give us a mini-workshop on printmaking and Japanese papers.

There will also be door prizes and raffle items, as well as lots of goodies to eat. (Members: please bring a tasty dish to share with friends!)

Last of all, we’ll be hosting our annual Calligra-flea Market. Time to clean out the studio and sell your wares. You may bring books, supplies, artwork, greeting cards, etc. to sell. In return, the CCC asks for a 20% donation from your total sales. That donation goes into our Tribute Fund, which helps us run our ever-increasing amount of public outreach events.

Non-members are very welcome! Hope to see you there!

Watchful Experimenting and the Fine Art of Controlled Scribbling

A Four-Day Workshop and Retreat
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 27-30, 2011

Do you want to leave the beaten paths of calligraphy? In this exciting 4-day workshop and retreat, we will leave behind the rules of traditional layout as these rules may paralyze or confine the student.

Through a series of purposeful exercises and fearless experiments, we will create new and original compositions. We will stay attentive to what happens on the paper and find solutions to questions that appear. One option is layering and the use of gesso, which we will fully explore. Gradually we will sharpen our graphic eye and learn about the hidden rules of experimental layout. Because the workshop is a retreat, the instructor will have even more time to work individually with each student including in the evenings.

We will look for the daring and unexpected in our compositions and also in our writing. We will try to avoid the obvious while focusing on experimental, free writing — which is not as free and careless as it may look. Even in mere scribbling there are qualities to appreciate.

We will endeavour to reduce the cute-factor in our work in favor of authenticity, a key goal in contemporary art.

Please use the special registration form to sign up for this amazing retreat!
