Bennett, Madison
MADISON BENNETT
THROUGHLINE
Size: 27.5 in x 39 in, broadside
Medium: Gouache on Calfskin Parchment
Attribution: N/A
Madison's 2022 MFA exhibition, Glimpsing Mirrors, explored ideas of internal monologue, isolation, and loneliness through calligraphic erasure. It featured 14 palimpsests on parchment; Throughline is one of them.
The calfskin's soft pink hue resulted from a (happy) processing accident at Pergamena Parchment & Leathers, the only remaining parchment manufacturer in the US. This ultimately inspired the entire aesthetic of the show, which aimed to use parchment beyond its typical applications and reinforce the idea that it can be a reliable substrate for contemporary visual artists. Two layers of stream-of-consciousness writing appear along the spine of the skin to highlight, rather than hide, parchment’s anatomical border.

EASTER, 1916
Size: 14" x 14" x 2", broadside
Medium: Glass, paper, bronze replica service medal, ash wood veneered timber frame made by the artist
Attribution: WB Yeats: Easter, 1916.
This replica medal from the Irish War of Independence was originally in Black and Tan colours, also the colours of the harshest and cruelest of British forces. I patinated the metal and it now appears more palatable, like the blue planet earth. It is surrounded by the poem by WB Yeats: Easter, 1916. The top sheet of glass reads: We know their dream; enough. To know they dreamed and are dead. Four sheets of glass engraved with writing over a painted paper background support the central medal.

I STILL BELIEVE
Size: 12" x 9", broadside
Medium: Metal nibs, watercolor, pastel, ink stick, watercolor paper, textured gilding base with acrylics, 24 karat and lemon golds.
Attribution: Anne Frank
Although I had done this quote previously over the years I felt a need to do it again. It never ceases to astonish, bring me to tears, and give me hope. I do have to say that when I was younger this sentiment came quite naturally. However, I find with age and the way that the world may erode spontaneous emotion, it is a conviction that, I now choose to believe.
In my year long course “26 Seeds: a Year to Grow”, one of the months I teach variations on Romans. One of those versions were “freely written capitals” based on letter forms in the Saint John’s Bible. I developed a version of those that I felt was suitable for this quote. I also wanted to integrate a gilding technique that I have developed over the years as well as the color technique for the backgrounds.

THE ARTICIFER ARISEN, THE ARTICIFER FALLEN
Size: 7" x 7" x 1.75" (closed), 7" x 21" (open), book
Medium: Three-color letterpress, handmade flax/cotton paper, drum leaf bind
Attribution: Original text
The Articifer Arisen, The Articifer Fallen aims to present the archetype of the maker as a symbol for humanity’s potential & ingenuity and our common collective failure to responsibly shepherd that potential. Daedalus, or more specifically the idea of Daedalus, is the central character throughout the cyclical storyline. Void of traditional mysticism and fantasy, one half of the book examines the ancient engineer’s recurring habit of revolutionary creation and observing as it causes personal/cultural/emotional tragedy. The deeds worsen and create larger, more catastrophic ramifications. In the second half, a Daedalus copycat appears in the twenty-first century, immersed in a world where the desire to make things for the right reason is nearly parallel to making them for the wrong one. The quick ascension of the engineer within this society leads directly to new potentials and age-old morality concerns that re-expose us to our inevitable and reoccurring downfall.

SERENDIPITY
Size: 24" x 5" x 2", 3-Dimensional
Medium: Indiana Limestone
In the essence of serendipity lies the unpredictable dance between intention and chance, where the unexpected meets the intended, creating moments of pure magic.
As an artist, I find myself captivated by the intricacies of language and the tangible weight of words. The choice of stone as my medium is deliberate; it symbolizes the enduring nature of serendipity itself, akin to how stone has weathered the tests of time.
In carving this piece, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and reverence for the serendipitous moments that shape us. May it serve as a reminder that amidst the chaos of life, there is beauty to be found in the unexpected, and magic waiting to be discovered in the most unlikely of places.

TAKE THE WIN
Size: 10" x 13", painting
Medium: Oil on Canvas
In recent years I have grown much closer to the traditions of quilting and textile weaving. I realize that a textile object has the perfect potential to be both geometric/orderly and flowing/organic. This is exactly my aim—to find a process that allows me to order my thoughts, while remaining fluid and improvisational. So my recent body of work has grown more consciously designed as I’ve taken the opportunity to learn about the various quilting patterns and color palettes. In addition I’ve incorporated research into the work of the women of the Bauhaus textile school, such as Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers. I’m excited by the color palettes within their watercolor drawings as well as the organic quality of their finished textile products. It’s the combination of rigor and play present in these Bauhaus artists, as I’ve also observed in American quilting traditions, that I’m most influenced by today.

Making letters, in expressive and informative ways, is my passion. Designing is truly a joy and a challenge, whether for function or aesthetic purposes, the letters and their possibilities are a part of who I am. I see the process of calligraphic mark making as a performance art, and I believe the power of ‘the written words as art’ crosses all disciplines. It’s a fantastic journey!

I take great pleasure in collaborating with, and expanding upon, the words of others by offering visual enhancement to echo the author’s message. My tools are an extension of my mind, body and soul.

TROOST (DUTCH) / SOLACE (ENGLISH)
Size: (open) 760 mm x 315 mm / (closed) 305 mm x 190 mm, book
Medium: pointed pen, bleedproof white gouache, black Velin d'Arches paper, handmade paper for the cover and back
Attribution: “Troost” by Johanna Kruit
This text was written in a new script I just developed using the pointed pen. This is something I love to do, and hope to do more of in the future. I started to design this script to keep myself from dark thoughts while my daughter was ill (she is well-recovered now). I named the script ‘Julietta’ after her. To develop the script, I began with four concepts: 'circle,' 'contrast,' 'pressure & release' and 'single line.' Starting with the letter 'a', I soon had the entire alphabet. It wasn’t easy because the letter shapes are very different from the usual capital letters. Then I wrote this large text about solace with bleedproof white on black Velin d'Arches paper.

Wildman, Julie
JULIE WILDMAN
SECRET LANGUAGE OF JOY
Size: Framed: 23" x 18", broadside / Metal: 24" x 12"
Medium: Original: Walnut ink on Rives BFK / Metal piece: Laser-cut copper
This is a piece inspired by work I saw in Denise Lach’s book “Journeys in Calligraphy.” It is asemic writing—meaning that it doesn’t say anything in particular. I frequently “write” like this when I want to express myself but don’t quite know what to say. In this instance, I am expressing joy in a “secret language.” Hence, the title.
I am showing this piece as my original work and as a metal piece that I sent out to a laser-cutting metal service.
Price: Original – NFS / Metal - $450, For Sale
