MONOLINE CALLIGRAPHY and HAND EMBOSSING
with Viktor Kams
When we think about block capitals and monoline calligraphy, automatically Rudolf Koch’s popular typeface Neuland comes to mind. But there is much more to monoline than the renown work of Koch.
Its modular shapes can be very playful and uncover multiple posibilites in terms of composition and graphic visuals. Monoline calligraphy is great to explore calligrams and also to introduce ourselves to handmade embossing due to its solid and thick strokes which are somehow easier to approach when we intend to cut the letters with an x-acto knife.
In this workshop we will explore my personal take on monoline calligraphy and how we can play with size, shape and composition variations before jumping to the hand embossing process where we will transform our design into an outstanding embossed piece of art.
This class allows students to express themselves when creating their personal designs while following the techniques that I will share, step by step, to achieve a clean and sharp embossing.
Embossing and debossing on paper are highly visual and very elegant techniques to practice by themselves or to combine with calligraphy.
If you have ever seen works from calligraphers using this technique and have wondered how it is done, this workshop is for you.
Supply List
• Your choice of broad edge pens and brushes ( I normally used automatic pens, or reed pens I make myself and Winsor and Newton flat brushes ½ inch is good but you can pick any size you want.
• Pencil, eraser and rulers
• Regular sketching “drawing” paper like Canson, Strathmore, Fabriano or similar
• Your choice of ink or gouache (I use walnut, sumi and W&N gouache)
• Exacto knife
• Glue stick (the yellow UHU is good)
• Ball stylus (different sizes; nail art tools are good. I use them because they are the most inexpensive. You can see them in the first advertising image above.)
• Cutting mat
• Watercolor paper 300gr minimum. We need it to be this thick because we will cut the stencil on this paper.
• Quality paper to emboss, around 150 or 200gr maximum (soft paper, not rigid. like Arches MBM, Arches Text Wove, BFK Rives or similar)
• Light box
