Drawn Letters: Finding Your Style, and Making it Art

Each of us has handwriting unique to ourselves. Even though it has been influenced by the era in which we grew up and what was taught in our particular schools, we all, over the years, have developed an individual style that is ours alone. When we write simply for ourselves, our hand settles into a comfort zone, and the letters which emerge flow unselfconsiously on to the page. Our hand simply “likes” certain shapes and slants and curves, and this becomes our style.

In the same way, it is possible to uncover one’s own unique style with drawn letters. As in handwriting, there are certain shapes and marks that one’s hand naturally wants to draw, and these become the foundation for developing one’s own drawn lettering style. We’ll start with our own printing, and will then move into a variety of ways in which to alter our own printed letters by varying height, weight, slant, size, and shape. By exaggerating letters far past our comfort zone, we will begin to discover how each letter can become a work of art in itself. Breaking free of conventional restraints, words take on a life of their own, sometimes legible, sometimes not, but always retaining the spirit of their creator.

Drawing letters allows one to slow down and consider each letter’s shape, and how it relates to the letters that follow it. It becomes a meditation. Creating a finished piece is not  the goal of this class. Rather, it is an opportunity to relax into creating letter shapes simply for the joy of seeing what emerges, and how it feeds one’s spirit.
