SMALL SPACES, BIG COMPOSITIONS

Have you ever been dissatisfied with your calligraphic work because there is something not quite right in the compositional rhythm? 

Composition is a key element. It is a whispered hint to those who come into contact with our work. The elements convey a sense of harmony, the blank space helps the eye to find stability. A sense of deep balance comes from the ability to compose, to not leave the observer wandering around alone in the discomfort of instability. 

What will happen in a limited space? Will the challenges of composition be the same as those of larger spaces, or will the process involved in creation lend a different meaning to calligraphy and our personal exploration? 

Our main surface will be a number of small canvases measuring 8” by 8”. Canvases are a seldom used support in artistic calligraphy, perhaps because it is taken for granted that they belong to the “classical arts.” The excitement will be to work with these small welcoming spaces and open up new artistic possibilities.  

We will explore techniques used to create backgrounds that will inspire our compositions - gesso, collage, rubber stamps, printing rollers, inks, powdered pigments….. We will then work with calligraphic marks - forms, letters and rhythms derived from Latin and non-Latin alphabets.
