ENGROSSER’S VERSAL CAPITALS
with Mike Kecseg
Versal Capitals were historically used in manuscripts for the beginnings of chapters, paragraphs, and verses. In this class we will focus on the way these letters were created and used by engrossers on things like certificates, resolutions, and testimonials. We’ll be learning step by step how to draw and paint both Versal Caps and Boxed Versal Caps. Once we’ve learned these techniques, we will decide on how to use them, either in traditional work or as more decorative elements in contemporary work. We’ll also look at the styles of lettering that go best with these capitals and design a practical or personal piece using what we’ve learned.
